4 Basics of the Road
The Big 4 Road Basics
Here is your quick-review cheat sheet based on our core driving standards. Use this to study before your next lesson or your NYC road test!
1. Position: Stay on the Right Side
Two-Way Streets: Always stay to the right of the center line.
One-Way Streets: Traffic flows in one direction only. Watch for "Do Not Enter" or "One Way" signs at intersections.
The Goal: Maintain a straight path and avoid drifting into oncoming traffic or bike lanes.
2. Speed: Control is Key
NYC Default Speed: Assume the limit is 25 mph unless you see a sign saying otherwise.
School Zones: Be extra vigilant; limits often drop to 15-20 mph when children are present.
Adaptability: If it’s raining, snowing, or heavy traffic, slow down. Safety always overrides the speed limit.
3. Distance: The 3-Second Rule
The Buffer: Keep a minimum of 2–3 seconds of space between you and the car in front.
How to measure: Pick a landmark (like a sign). When the car ahead passes it, count "One-one-thousand, two-one-thousand..." You shouldn't reach the landmark before you finish counting.
NYC Tip: In stop-and-go traffic, you should always be able to see the rear tires of the car in front of you touching the pavement.
4. Scanning: Keep Your Eyes Moving
Don’t get "tunnel vision." Your eyes should move every few seconds in this order:
Front: Look 12–15 seconds ahead for hazards.
Mirrors: Check your rearview and side mirrors regularly.
Sides: Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and cars emerging from side streets.
Back: Be aware of who is tailgating or approaching quickly from behind.
Pro-Tip: The NYC Road Test examiner isn't just watching what you do, but how you look. Exaggerate your head movements when scanning mirrors and blind spots so they know you're paying attention!
