VMARE Driving School · NYC

Frequently asked
questions.

Everything you need to know before booking — from lessons and pricing to road tests and permits.

Most driving schools hand you an instructor and wish you luck. At VMARE, your instructor is briefed before your first lesson — they already know your experience level, your goals, and whether you're nervous. Every lesson builds on the last. We track your progression, run mock road tests before recommending you schedule, and handle all the logistics so you're not coordinating anything yourself.
It depends on your starting point. Complete beginners typically need 10–20 hours. If you've driven before or recently completed Driver's Ed, 5–10 hours is often enough. Your instructor will give you a realistic read after your first lesson.
Before your lesson, your instructor is already briefed on where you are and what you need to work on. They pick you up, walk you through what the session will focus on, and adapt in real time based on how you're doing. After the lesson, they update your progress notes so nothing gets lost between sessions. Every lesson connects to the one before it.
Yes. You'll practice in a Toyota Corolla and take your road test in the same model. No surprises on test day.
Absolutely. Many of our students are adults learning for the first time. There's no age where it's too late — and patient, experienced instructors make a big difference.
Yes — refresher lessons are one of our most common bookings. You'd be surprised how quickly it comes back.
Driving lessons, car rental for the test, and an expedited DMV appointment (1–2 weeks). You use the same model Toyota Corolla you practiced in. See the full breakdown at vmaredriving.com/driving-packages.
We coordinate everything — the car (the same one used in lessons), the appointment, and a warm-up lesson before the test itself. Your instructor picks you up, runs through the key points, and gets you to the test site calm and prepared. You don't coordinate anything.
As you get closer to test-ready, lessons shift to road test skills — mock tests, examiner criteria, common failure points, and a warm-up lesson on test day itself.
Your instructor runs a simulated road test on the actual test route. You get specific feedback on what passed and what needs work — so you know exactly where you stand before the real thing.
It happens, and it's okay. We'll debrief with you, identify what went wrong, and get you back on the road. Many students pass on their second attempt with focused prep.
With our expedited service, typically 1–2 weeks. Standard DMV appointments can take months — the expedited appointment is one of the most valuable parts of our packages.
Very. NYC traffic is genuinely intimidating — even for people who've driven elsewhere. Our instructors work with nervous drivers constantly and know how to build confidence gradually.
Yes — this is one of our most common situations. Students who've failed once, students with driving anxiety, students who've been told they're "not ready" — we work with all of them. The approach is the same: start where you are, build gradually, never rush. Your instructor knows before you arrive if nerves are a concern.
They start slow, explain everything before asking you to do it, and never rush you. If you mention nerves when booking, your instructor is briefed before you even meet.
Your instructor will tell you directly. We run a mock road test before recommending you schedule — so it's not a guess.
We keep parents in the loop throughout the process. If you share context when booking — your child's experience level, concerns, timeline — we factor it in before the first lesson. You can request progress updates after lessons, and we're reachable by text at 917-617-4520 for any questions along the way.
Yes. Students who've had bad experiences elsewhere are common. We take a different approach — patient, structured, no pressure. The instructor briefing system means your child doesn't have to re-explain their situation at every lesson.
A NY learner's permit. If they don't have one yet, our homepage walks through exactly how to get it. A parent or guardian also needs to sign form MV-45 at the DMV.
One of the two is required before the road test. Driver's Ed (completed through school) counts. If they didn't do Driver's Ed, they need the 5-hour pre-licensing course ($50, taught live via Zoom). Note: without Driver's Ed, under-18 students receive a junior license with NYC driving restrictions.
A junior license (Class DJ) means no driving in NYC at any time, unsupervised driving only between 5 AM–9 PM, and a max of 1 passenger under 21. All restrictions end at 18. A full Class D license (requires Driver's Ed) has none of these restrictions.
We pick up in the Upper East Side and Upper West Side, Manhattan. Students also travel from across Manhattan and Queens (Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside) to meet us.
Through our online booking system. You can also text us at 917-617-4520.
Please give us at least 24 hours notice to reschedule or cancel without charge.
Lessons Only is just driving hours. Road Test Prep adds car rental and an expedited DMV appointment. Do Everything For Me adds the 5-hour pre-licensing course on top — for $50 more than Road Test Prep. See the full comparison at vmaredriving.com/driving-packages.
Yes — a single lesson is $80/hr with no package required. Packages save you money the more hours you buy.

Our homepage walks you through it step by step — what to study, what documents to bring, and what to expect at the DMV. Most people are done in a single visit.
Yes. Your foreign license doesn't transfer to NY, so you'll need a NY learner's permit first. Once you have it, lessons work exactly the same way.
No. New York requires you to pass the written permit test and road test regardless of where you learned to drive.
We send you next-step guidance — what to do with your temporary permit, what to expect in the mail, and anything else you need. If you want more practice after passing (highway driving, parallel parking confidence, road trips), refresher lessons are available.
Absolutely. Many students come back for highway driving, parking confidence, or to feel comfortable before a road trip. There's no requirement to stop after the test.
The MV-278 is the standard 5-hour pre-licensing course certificate — a live Zoom class available to anyone. Valid for 1 year.

The MV-285 is a Driver Education Certificate of Completion issued through approved high school or college Driver's Ed programs. Valid for 2 years. Only available to students enrolled in those programs.

Both qualify a student for the NY road test. Learn more →
For most students, MV-278 is the faster and more flexible option — valid for 1 year, easy to schedule, available to anyone.

MV-285 may be worth it if your teen is already enrolled in a school Driver's Ed program — valid for 2 years and can allow certain 17-year-olds to qualify for a senior license earlier.

If you're 18+ or want the fastest path to your road test, go with MV-278.
Yes. In New York, you must complete either the MV-278 pre-licensing course or a Driver's Ed program (MV-285) before you can take the road test. The course is classroom-based — it does not include behind-the-wheel instruction, which is separate.
Ideally when you're already thinking about your road test — taking it closer to your test date means the material is fresh and gives you a better sense of what to expect on the road.

Yes. Your foreign license doesn't satisfy the NY pre-licensing requirement. You need either an MV-278 or MV-285 before you can take the road test.
MV-285 is offered through select Driver Education programs such as The Dalton School, Queensborough Community College, and Xaverian High School. Availability changes — contact schools directly to confirm. See full list →
