What Should You See In Your Mirrors?
Are You Seeing the Right Things?
Adjusting your mirrors correctly is the foundation of safe NYC driving. If your mirrors aren't set right, your blind spots become dangerous. Use this quick guide to calibrate your view.
1. Left Side Mirror (Driver’s Side)
The Setup: You should see just a small sliver of your own car (usually the rear door handle) and the entire lane beside you.
Safe Distance Check: A car is safe to merge in front of when you can see both of its headlights clearly in the mirror.
Danger Zone: If you only see part of the car or it looks "cut off," it is too close. Stay in your lane!
Watch Out For: Fast-moving motorcycles and "lane-splitters" who often appear suddenly on your left.
2. Right Side Mirror (Passenger Side)
The Setup: You should see both your front and rear door handles. This gives you a wider reference point for the curb and the adjacent lane.
Safe Distance Check: You should be able to see the entire outline of the vehicle behind you.
Danger Zone: If the car looks huge or "fills" the mirror, do not merge.
Watch Out For: This is the most critical side for NYC! Watch for cyclists in bike lanes, pedestrians stepping off the curb, and double-parked trucks forcing cars to merge into you.

The Golden Rule of Mirrors
A mirror check is never enough! NYC is a high-activity environment. Before every single lane change or turn:
Check your Rearview Mirror.
Check your Side Mirror.
Perform a Shoulder Check (Blind Spot): Quickly turn your head to ensure a cyclist or small vehicle isn't hiding right next to your door.
VMARE Pro-Tip: On the road test, the examiner needs to see you checking your mirrors. Don't just move your eyes—move your head slightly so they know you are scanning your environment!
